MEXICO — Ongoing
We had planned to run a series of projects in Mexico in 2020 to support refugees and migrants along the US-Mexico border. The global COVID-19 pandemic forced us to postpone these plans but, in 2022, discussions with partner organisations working on the ground in Mexico resumed and we were able to launch our first pilot program.
After two years of conversations and needs assessments, we determined that the most impactful way to serve the refugee and migrant community would be by supporting those that serve them. While this was a departure from our "usual” way or working, we have found that by training the hard-working individuals that serve the refugee community, we can have a more lasting and deeper impact on the refugee ecosystem.
Over 8 days, we led community classes for refugee and migrant women, children, men, and the LGBTQI+ community. These classes offered space for folks to rest, play, and reconnect with themselves and their inner strength. Members of our partner organizations often joined us in the spaces to witness first-hand the powerful impact that this work has on the community. For two-full days, we then led leaders working in service of the refugee and migrant community in trauma-informed movement, self and collective care, and sustainable service so that they may continue to create spaces for refugees and migrants to rest and be even after we left.
Conversations to continue this work in other areas of Mexico are ongoing and we are currently planning for more trainings for service workers and carers. Please consider supporting these efforts by donating here.
